Jen & Brandon: Heinz Chapel & Grand Hall at the Priory Wedding Photos

Jen & Brandon's wedding (or 2 year vow renewal/celebration!) marks our very last Covid wedding reschedule for us. These two have waited SO long to celebrate with their friends and family - over four years from the time they originally got engaged! And boy, have they had quite a few unexpected events come up. First, their original wedding venue shut down, forcing them to change their date and find a new venue. Then - Covid hit, and different rounds of closures forced them to reschedule not only once, but twice.

But they still decided to officially tie the knot back in 2020 in a very small ceremony, which I love. They didn't let all of the reschedules and closures keep them from celebrating what truly matters - a union of two in marriage! But of course, they still wanted to celebrate with their friends and family, so they decided to keep their reception plans and celebrate a two year vow renewal instead.

And there's even more to celebrate this year - they have a baby on the way, and they just closed on their first home. What a joy! It only made their celebration that much sweeter.

Jen & Brandon, thank you for letting us photograph your beautiful wedding celebration. It was an honor to celebrate so many huge milestones with you alongside your friends & family! You two are a joy, and I'm sad that our time of working together has come to a close!

Casey & Danny: Picturesque Fall St. Vincent College Wedding

Casey & Danny met at St. Vincent College, got engaged at St. Vincent College, had their engagement photos taken at St. Vincent College, and on a beautiful October weekend, they finally said "I do" in the St. Vincent Basilica at St. Vincent College!

And even though we had a little sprinkling of rain on and off, we had was the most beautiful fall day to celebrate their marriage!

I started off the day with Casey at her childhood home for getting ready photos, then we headed off to St. Vincent's for a beautiful ceremony, and some photos around the campus that brought them together! At the reception, they had a beautiful foot washing ceremony followed by lots of dancing, cookies, and mingling with family and friends!

One of my favorite details from Casey & Danny’s wedding: Casey carried her grandma’s Bible with her bouquet down the aisle that has been carried by all of the women in her family since. What a sweet tradition! ❤️

Casey & Danny, thank you so much for the honor of being a part of your beautiful day. It was such an honor!

How to Get All of the Wedding Photos You're Dreaming Of

How to Get All of the Wedding Photos You're Dreaming Of

When it comes to wedding photography, what brides and grooms might be looking for out of their wedding photos can be very broad from couple to couple. Every couple has must have shots (i.e., the things that happen at every single wedding - the first kiss, first dance, parent dances, etc.), but then there are other photos that might not be as obvious - photos that are based more on preference or details specific to that couple (i.e., a photo of the couple dipping in front of their reception venue, a photo of the bride with her great Aunt Suzie, etc.). As a wedding photographer, it’s my job to capture not only the must-have photos that happen at every wedding day, but also the small details, relationships, and specific photos that might not be so obvious.

To do this, I like to practice three specific things - communication, coordination, and cooperation, all of which must be strong between me and my clients. In this blog post, I’m going to break down how practicing each of these three C’s with my clients has helped me create & capture images that my clients love!

  1. Communication

Good communication is an essential building block for any relationship, including a photographer-client relationship. I love spending time getting to know my clients, whether through Zoom at an initial consult meeting, at their engagement session, or on phone calls leading up to their wedding day discussing details. This helps me get a better idea of who they are as a couple, what their like and dislike are, what prompts/direction they respond best to (or don’t respond to at all!), and ultimately helps me figure out how to best photograph them in a way that’s true to who they are. I love when couples give me multiple opportunities to get to know them, because it helps me serve them all the better!

Leading up to the wedding day, communication becomes even more important. There are SO MANY details to communicate about when it comes to a wedding day - addresses for the reception and ceremony, other vendors who will be involved in the day, start and end times, VIP’s, family members, must-have photos, family formal combinations, special details - the list goes on and on! I like to collect all of this information via an online questionnaire that my clients fill out, that is then submitted to me (about 2 to 3 months before the wedding day). This allows me to have all of that information in one place, straight from the bride and/or groom. I can refer to this questionnaire whenever I want! Leading up to the wedding day, I use this questionnaire to create the wedding day timeline, which leads me to my next C - Coordination.

2. Coordination

After communication comes coordination, and there can’t be much coordination of the photo timeline for the wedding day without solid communication!

The first part of coordination happens before the wedding day. Once I receive all of the details about a wedding day from a bride & groom, I take those details and create a master photo timeline. This is my guide for the couple’s wedding day, and allows me to create a game plan for their timeline to make sure we are able to get ALL of the photos they are hoping for! I love when my couples rely on me to help them create their wedding timeline, because I know from experience (10 years of weddings as of 2022!) how much time certain things on a wedding day take… and it’s usually longer than most think!

For example: does it usually take 2 minutes for you to get into your outfit for the day before work? That’s great! But on your wedding day, it will take longer. You may have buttons on the back of your dress, which can take a lengthier amount of time to complete. You might have special jewelry you’ll be wearing, or shoes that have clasps that you’re not used to - not to mention a veil to put in! I encourage my brides to leave 15 to 20 minutes just for getting into their wedding day attire. Sometimes it takes less time, and sometimes it takes more, but that is the average!

Other things that can take additional time on a wedding day are: travel between locations, bustling the dress, restroom breaks, walking between photo locations, receiving lines, first looks with a family member or the wedding party, and even more! Coordinating a solid game plan prior to the wedding day that both me and my couple are on the same page with is key to ensuring that we have enough time to get all of the photos we need, and that the couple, family, and bridal party don’t feel rushed while completing those photos.

The second part of coordination happens on the actual wedding day with the execution of that timeline. Many weddings I photograph do not have a “day of” coordinator (i.e., someone keeping everyone and everything on time on the wedding day). Some may have a ceremony coordinator or reception event coordinator, but what about everything that happens prior to the ceremony and reception, like making sure the bridesmaids/mother of the bride are dressed before the bride, getting the bride dressed, leaving for the church on time, and any photos that might happen in between? Many times, the photographer steps in to coordinate the timing of these events to make sure the bride, groom, bridal party, and family aren’t running behind. For me - it’s a role I happily take on! I love being able to help in this way, and help my couples stay on track for the day. Even the most laid back wedding needs to have some semblance of a timeline and coordination in order to run smoothly!

3. Cooperation

After the communication and coordination comes cooperation, which pulls all three of these pieces of a client-photographer relationship together. Cooperation together on a wedding day between the couple, bridal party, family, photographer, and other vendors is key to having a fantastic day, and to getting all of the photos you’re hoping for! There are many moving parts on a wedding day, and many opportunities for hiccups. On a wedding day, there are a few specific relationships that I, as a photographer, find the need for cooperation with:

Cooperating with the Couple, Bridal Party & Family - First, with the people I’m photographing. This includes the couple (obviously!), the bridal party, and the family members of the couple. The vast majority of the time, cooperation between me and my couples is very easy (first because the ones I photograph are so amazing!), but also because I’ve had the opportunity to build a relationship with the couple. However, the majority of the time, I’m coming into a wedding day without having met the bridal party or family who will be present, which means I need to take the time to build trust with them prior to directing them around. I love to do this by finding ways to encourage the bridal party and family members as much as I can during the getting ready portion of the day, when my job is a bit more candid. That way, when we come to the parts of the day that I need to direct and take control of a bit more (bridal party portraits, family formals), I have built that trust a bit (at least with the bridesmaids and bride’s family!) and have hopefully gained a bit of their trust.

Family members and the bridal party cooperating with the direction and timing I share helps us continue through the day and get all of the photos that the bride & groom want. Problems can arise if family members wander off to cocktail hour during the family photo portion of the day, which ultimately sets the timeline behind. Sometimes, if the bridal party has had a bit too much to drink, they aren’t paying attention to the direction I’m giving, which makes the photos take a bit longer. I love to try to make the photo portion of the day as quick and painless as possible for the larger groups of people involved (family & bridal party), so when all cooperate, we are able to get through photos faster and get them to the reception even quicker!

Cooperating with Other Vendors - Second, I find the need for cooperation between myself and other vendors. On a wedding day, photographers have the unique opportunity to see MANY of the wedding day vendors - usually beginning in the bridal getting ready suite with the hair/makeup artists, working with the videographer throughout the entire day, the “church lady,” limo driver, and finally the DJ and venue event staff/coordinator. Because we work with so many vendors on a wedding day, it’s important for us to put our best foot forward whenever we are able to, and to try to stay on track for the sake of honoring those other vendors who have put so much time and effort into a couple’s wedding day and who want them to have the best day, too!

It’s important for the bride and groom to be diligent in communication and coordinating between their vendors for the sake of the vendors cooperating well on the wedding day. For example: it’s important to ask your photographer when they would like to start taking photos so the hair and makeup artists know when they need to have the bride, bridesmaids, and mother of the bride ready for photos. If this crucial piece of information is not communicated, it can make the entire day run behind. Another good example is communicating how much time the videographer will need on the wedding day. Will they need any time separate from the photo portion of the day for their own video footage? If so, the photographer should know in advance, since they are usually the ones coordinating the day and creating the timeline! (Note: this might not apply if you are working with a skilled wedding planner who can coordinate multiple vendor timelines). Does the photographer know when the limo will pick you up to take you to the ceremony? Does the reception venue know how much time you will need between the end of the ceremony and beginning of the reception for photos? (Note: always ask your photographer how long portraits will take, don’t assume a time based on what your reception venue tells you! Your photographer is the one creating your wedding photos and knows how long it will take them to get all of the photos you want - not your venue!).

Proper communication and coordination between vendors will result in better cooperation for all parties involved, and will, in turn, help your wedding day run more smoothly!

Abigail & Austin: Pittsburgh Botanic Gardens Wedding

Abby & Austin celebrated their marriage at the one and only Pittsburgh Botanic Garden on the most gorgeous of early fall days, and they flew in from Seattle to do so!

This intimate, laid back affair included their closest family and friends, as well as some who they haven't seen since pre-Covid! Needless to say, it was the sweetest time for catching up and celebrating the union of these two people who just genuinely love each other so much!

Abby & Austin had their first look at the Japanese Garden, followed by some portraits, then onto their ceremony, then some more portraits around the Celebration Garden, a few in the Meadow, and a few on the pathway back to the reception space (which probably ended up being some of my favorites from the whole day!). The pair chose a tent with a transparent roof - which let in so much beautiful sunlight! It was perfect for getting that almost completely outdoor affect, without having to worry about there being a threat of rain. During the reception, they focused on toasts from family & family members, interacting with their guests, all while being serenaded by some gorgeous jazz music!

Abby & Austin, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for letting us be a part of your sweet celebration. It was truly a day to remember!

Anna & Henry: White Barn in Prospect, PA Wedding Photos

Anna & Henry had the most beautiful September day for their White Barn wedding (& of course, the most beautiful venue! But I know I'm biased since this was where I got married back in 2015!!!)

Anna & Henry’s wedding day was full of special details to the couple, and so much fun! In the photos below, you’ll easily be able to see how much these two adore each other and how much fun they love to have!

One of my favorite things about working at the White Barn is that everything takes place there. The ladies can get ready there, the ceremony, photos, and reception can all happen there - which makes the day much more relaxing for the family & bridal party (and it’s not too bad from a vendor perspective, either ;) ).

After the ladies were finished getting ready, Anna shared a first look with her then future mother-in-law, then with her bridesmaids, and then with her dad. After taking some photos of Anna with her bridesmaids and Henry with his groomsmen, we were all set for the ceremony to begin!

Post ceremony, we dove right into family formals, then bridal party portraits, and finally photos of the bride & groom. The White Barn has so many great backdrops on their property, and we were able to use so many of them during the time we had allotted for photos! And Anna & Henry were such naturals in front of the camera! (Click here to see their engagement photos from last year!)

Their reception began with confetti guns and a champagne tower, and the party went on all night long!

Congratulations on your wedding day, Anna & Henry!!! Thank you so much for letting us be a part of it!

Jackie & Gerald: Book Inspired Pinehall at Eisler Farms Wedding

To Mordor and back, with Jackie & Gerald ❤️

From the green hills of the Shire to the wooded realm of Lothlórien, this wedding felt as if it were a fantasy straight out of the books Jackie & Gerald adore most!

Jackie & Gerald's wedding day at Pinehall at Eisler Farms was nothing short of a fairytale. The two made sure to incorporate so many special details - including their main overarching theme of books! Besides incorporating lots of beautiful vintage books into their decor, this pair incorporated some very subtle nods to one of their favorite series, Lord of the Rings - from signage to walking down the aisle music, to a personal message from Lord Denethor to Gerald (as Jackie's wedding gift to Gerald - the photos of his reaction are in the blog post below and are just the sweetest!).

We absolutely adored getting to spend the day celebrating this sweet, sweet pair! Their genuine hearts & kindness made our jobs so, so easy. We love you two! Congratulations on your wedding day, and on your marriage!

PS - thanks to Nicholas for his knowledge of LOTR, making this blog post possible ;)

PSS - I just have to add how much we LOVE photographing weddings at Pinehall at Eisler Farms! Not only is it a gorgeous venue with so many lovely photo spots, but it’s also located close to home, which is always fun!

Erin & Ben: Longue Vue Country Club Wedding Photos

You might remember Erin & Ben from their wintery engagement session earlier this year at The Frick! (Click here to check it out!). We went from one weather extreme (super cold!) for their engagement photos, to the other extreme (quite warm!) for their wedding day! But both days were just as delightful ❤️

Erin & Ben met through Ben's sister, who Erin was friends with before Erin & Ben ever started dating! On a beautiful summer weekend back in July, they said "I do" at Sacred Heart Church in Pittsburgh, then celebrated the night away at the beautiful Longue Vue Country Club. This day was a lovely dream from start to finish!

Megan & Devon: The Gathering Place Wedding Photos

A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of photographing Megan & Devon's travel-inspired wedding at The Gathering Place at Darlington Lake!

Megan started off the day getting ready at her childhood home, and their ceremony took place at St. Killian Parish in Cranberry Township. Their pup, Murphy, met us for a few photos after the ceremony (he also makes a surprise appearance on their cake! ) and after a quick rain shower, the skies parted as we drove to the Gathering Place in time for us to take some photos around their gorgeous property!

Megan & Devon had bagpipers during cocktail hour (Devon also plays the bagpipe!), and lots of travel themed decorations - including table numbers featuring all of the locations they've traveled to together! Devon's grandma baked their wedding cake (which was gorgeous!) and the evening went on with lots of dancing, chatting, and even with a few little spots of sunshine... which we took advantage of for a few photos!

Megan & Devon, thank you so much for having us a part of your wedding day. It was such an honor to get to celebrate alongside you!

Haley & John: Summer Pittsburgh Botanic Garden Wedding

Haley & John met in Panera Bread, of all places, while ordering their food! And a few weeks ago, they celebrated their marriage at the beautiful Pittsburgh Botanic Garden, surrounded by a small group of their closest friends & family during a GORGEOUS outdoor ceremony, followed by the sweetest reception!

If you’ve never been to the Pittsburgh Botanic Gardens, you might just be missing out! Not only is it a lovely reception venue, but it has gardens and trails (and a cute little shop/food spot!) where you could easily spend a whole day taking in the beauty of creation.

And when it comes to weddings… PBG knows how to do it! They have the prettiest ceremony backdrop, and lots beautiful backdrops for photos. Haley & John decided on a mid-day wedding featuring a brunch menu (DELISH, thanks to Hazelnut Catering!) and a very laid back atmosphere, which was so much fun and such a nice change of pace! They had the sweetest, most thoughtful details, too - both had lockets they wore on their person in memory of loved ones who had passed. Haley chose her veil (covered with gorgeous pearls!) as a nod to her mom’s wedding dress, which was also covered in pearls! Her something blue was her toenails. They had everyone sign a vintage record as their guest book and had John’s grandfather’s record player displaying it, and they had signature cocktails named after their cats!

Because they opted for a shorter, earlier reception, they opted to use more of their photo coverage towards portraits of the two of them… and THAT was so much fun, too! We were able to hit so many beautiful spots around PBG, including the Japanese Gardens, the fields, a few beautiful pathways, and the cozy inside of the welcome center! They even take you to all the spots on a golf cart… which was a blessing for such a hot day! We were also able to use the last bit of our time to travel to Allegheny Commons Park on the North Side of Pittsburgh for a few extra portraits!

But above all of the meaningful details and the pretty backdrops, what stuck out the most to me on Haley & John’s wedding day was their genuine joy with becoming husband and wife. There were many happy tears shed by loving family & friends (and by the bride & groom themselves), beautiful, heartfelt toasts given, and just an overall atmosphere of love. What a joy to be a part of!

Haley & John, a HUGE congrats to you on your wedding day! Thank you so much for letting us celebrate with you! ❤️

Emily & Dave: Italian Inspired Bella Sera Event Villa Wedding Photos

Emily & Dave had the perfect Italian villa inspired summer wedding day at the most gorgeous Bella Sera!

While it may have been one of the hottest days of the year at that point, it surely did not dampen this epic celebration! Emily & Dave really wanted to enjoy cocktail hour with their friends and family, so they decided to opt for a first look, which allowed us to complete the vast majority of their portraits (bride & groom, bridal party, and family formals) prior to the ceremony. It also allowed us to get some candids of cocktail hour, and gave us a solid chunk of time to photograph all of the gorgeous reception details at Bella Sera!

Right after dinner, we snuck back out into a grassy area for a few extra portraits of just Emily & Dave! I always LOVE this part of the day, when (if) couples decide to sneak out during sunset or golden hour for a few photos. Couples are typically so much more relaxed at this point in the day, and it really lets us get some different types of images!

After their golden hour photos, we headed back into the reception for parent dances and for LOTS more dancing. Emily & Dave had a huge dancing crowd, and we got so many fun photos of Emily & Dave with their guests on the dance floor (don’t worry… you’ll see!)

We absolutely LOVED getting to be a part of Emily & Dave’s day and capture the beginning of this next chapter. A HUGE thank you to Emily, Dave, and their friends & family for braving the heat for photos and for just being amazing to work with!

Congratulations, Emily & Dave! ❤️

In addition to having a wonderful couple, bridal party, and family members to work with, we were able to work with an incredible vendor team, too… check them out below!

I love when we are able to get a photo with our couples! ❤️ A big thank you to the guest who took on my “fancy camera” for this sweet shot!
